fishing report - Dec 09
Updated: Mon Dec 9, 2024
Lake level remains 1 ft 4 in low, still waiting for the significant rainfall that seems to evade the lake every time it approaches. Getting a little cooling though, as the water temps have now begun to dip into the upper 50's.
Fishing remains generally GOOD, just have to work around the shorter bite periods and the weather.
Some fishing that is often overlooked by Texas anglers is right in many towns, rainbow trout . This fishing can often provide some relief from wintertime "cabin fever" and the not-being-to-able-to-get-out-there blues or blahs. Its also a very good way to get the yougsters into fishing, These potentially short fishing trips (shorter attention spans of the youngsters), being in town and with shorter prep-and-go time, often get results faster. In Tyler, for example (where I live) the fishing is provided from from late Nov to about March, with 2 trout stockings, around Thanksgiving and New Years and is limited to the 2 city parks at either end of Broadway, Faulkner Park and Glass Park/Woldert Pond. Both ponds provide easy parking and walk-up bank fishing. Most productive is bait fishing, with canned corn or Gulp paste baits, using medium or med/light rods with open face spinning reels loaded with 6 lb or 6lb equiv diameter braid, 5 to 6 1/2 ft. These the kids can handle, will be able to feel the bite and the fight, and can form the basis for their fishing experience. Many towns in Texas have this program, provided by the TPWD, and the program and details can be found within the Parks and Wildlife website, just look for the trout fishing and neihborhood fishin' headings.
