Article, 8 Aug. Lake Palestine has gotten to 1.8 feet low as of Sunday the 19th, but water temp has come down a few degrees to about 86 by mid afternoon.Looking at the next two weeks' weather forecast however, there are just bright sunny days, wind less than 10, and no rain, which means that the lake will continue to drop during that period, probably to as much as minus 2.3 feet, and water temps will get back up, approaching 90.
For boaters, this lake level is where you must really consider where the stumps are, not just the ones that you can see now, but especially the places where you used to see them and don't anymore. Just like the ones that are emerging now, a lot of those stumps are worn down by age and boat propellers and are right under the surface.
I took advantage of the lull in general fishing activity last week to go salmon fishing up in Washington state. Fishing from Westport on the Pacific coast through an outfit called Deep Sea Charters (deepseacharters.biz), I went out on a couple of day trips, being out on the ocean about 11 hours each time. Salmon fishing as done there is stand up, rod-holding fishing, using long, 8 1/2 ft rods to absorb the salmon's jumps and gyrations. This is bait fishing, using dead herring as the boat drifts, and a technique called "mooching", which keeps the bait in constant spinning motion.
Fishing was slow, and on the second day the ocean was very rough, not from wind-driven waves but from the ocean current going the opposite direction of the ocean swells, causing waves as high as 15 feet.It was good to get away from the heat for awhile. On the coast the temperatures were in the mid 60's to low 70's.
That area is cool enough that the blackberries, which grow wild everywhere, even in town, were ripening and made a couple of good stop-and-grab snacks.
