Article, 14 May.There was a large fish kill this week on Lake Palestine. Several hundred, probably many more, fish were observed floating on the lake beginning Friday afternoon through late Sunday afternoon. The fish that I observed all appeared to be white bass, and all appeared to have died between early Friday and late Saturday. The fish that I observed also appeared to have all come from the southern part of the lake, toward the dam, with the relatively strong southerly wind blowing the carcasses north. Also noted was that all the dead fish appeared to be white bass, with no other species. There were some reports of "stripers", but I observed no fish larger than about 16 inches, and know that a lot of people have trouble telling the two apart. Significant was the fact that no other species, catfish, bass, crappie, or others, were observed going belly up. Mr Greg Conley, Pollution Biologist for the Inland Fisheries Div of Tyler, said that the die off was most likely an incident of post-spawn stress in the white bass. He said that this was not an usual occurrence among this species, though there hasn't been a major event like this on Lake Palestine in many years. He said that it being a single species incident further points to something other than a general disease, pollution, or oxygen lack.Monday afternoon, on my way back home from Tyler, I didn't observe any floaters, so hopefully the problem period has passed.Jim,
