Fishing report 5 Oct- We continue to experience a series of "bluebird days", with warm, sunny days, few clouds, and light winds. This has led to continued difficult daytime fishing, increased thermocline and warmwater turnover incidence, and, surprisingly, and an outburst of salvinia growth.
The thermocline/turnovers are resulting in some local fish kills, primarily channel cats. Fish that have been hooked and landed , and therefore at least temporarily weakened, are also susceptible due to the reduced oxygen in many parts of the lake. This is also occurring in many other East Texas lakes.
The increase in the occurrence of salvinia is also happening at many East Texas lakes, you may see the Texas Fisheries people out on the lakes spraying herbicide on theses plants, trying to kee p them from taking over the surfaces of the lakes, which is deadly to all fish and wildlife living underwater. To help prevent the spread of these plants we are all asked to use a little extra care to make sure no plants (leaves, blossoms, roots, etc) remain on our boats. Game wardens are making a special point to watch for this.
