Trout fishing, 17 Dec. Rainbow trout fishing is set to begin again in the local area.
The TX Dept of Fish and Wildlife is beginning to stock trout in the Community Fishing Lakes program. This program stocks fish in smaller municipal ponds, usually city or community parks, but also in some state parks, normally putting trout in during the colder months, December through February, and putting catfish in during the warmer months, April through September.
The ponds in our area that are normally stocked with trout are in Tyler, Canton, Chandler, and Kilgore. You can find the schedule of stocking, dates and number of fish, by going to the TPWD website and searching Neighborhood Fishin'.
For the stocked rainbows, there is no minimum size (they'll be 5-8 inches), a limit of 5 per day, and a normal freshwater license is required. The first stocking has already taken place for the Tyler Faulkner Park. I go there each Winter as break from not being able to go out on the lake, and just to take advantage of some short periods when I can get away for just a couple of hours and fish, and expect to catch something.
The TPWD website has some fishing suggestions, but I find the Berkley Power Bait trout bait, yellow, in the jar, and fished with a # 8 hook and a light weight does just fine.
